Redundant Technology
Redundant Technology is an optional rule for those races and cultures that have had Advanced Technology for a very, very long time. Redundant Technology simply means the added safety features and designing codes that have been placed on a Device that was once important, or at times occurs rarely. For example: In modern cars, the added safety feature of Airbags, is a Redundant Technology. Perhaps in a thousand years of developing a car, the Airbag safety feature may still be used even if it is rarely needed. All because human engineers just never got rid of the the helpful feature of Airbags ever since it was placed in as part of the designing of cars. This is Redundant Technology.
For Mekton, it just isn't worth planning for such details in creation of Mek to think about all these Redundancies, even though in reality they would exist. Much like Parts Unknown™, Reduntancy has it's place, but unlike Parts Unknown™, Redundancy is far more important in possibly saving a pilot's life. Redundancy may actually save a pilot's life, it's a small margin for survival, but every chance helps. In the end Redundancy just adds a little more reality to Mekton (But not much : ) )
Another reason for the Redundancy ruling is that Redundant Technology helps to enhanced the meaning of Advance Technology. Advance Technology should contain those little extra surprises that prove a device has not just been created an half-hour ago, but look like it has stood for ages and could stand for eons more. (Example: An Advance Tech of an alien relic may operate using a mindcontrol panel, but there still could be a manual control backup system through Redundancy. ) That of course is up to debate, but on this point it is the Arthur's opinion.
One other thing Redundancy covers is, as much as Reduntancy can aid an operator it can also be used to hamper them as well. Xenophobic aliens may have added a Redundancy feature in their machines that would make the device run a self-distract sequence or run other such operations against those who are not of the race that created it. Example: In Macross/Robotech episode Boobytrap, the SDF-1 fired it's great guns against approaching Zentraedi ships despite it's human operators wishes.
Redundancy is mostly affected by Two factors. The first is Time, the longer a device has been built and refined the more chance of Redundancies have also been built into it. The second is Mindset, a very important point to consider is who designed and created the device can be accounted for. Example: Xenophobic races would create machines that are hard to be used against them, while safety minded races may have more safety features built into their machines.
Redundancy Check: Any device created has an automatic 2% that an unsaid Redundant Technology is in place to save the operator's life.
Redundancy Modifiers:
- Body Implants: +2%.
- Any other Machine: +4%.
- Time:
- +1% per decade for the first ten decades.
- +2% per century after the first.
- Mindset: Referee should choose modifier based on who designed the machine and who built the machine. (The two [built, design] can be two separate things.)
