Laser Designators
By Jim Hunsinger
Laser target designators emit a low powered "beam" of energy in order to "paint" a target. When a target is painted it means that it is being struck by the beam being emitted by the laser target designator. The beam reflects off of the item being painted allowing "smart" missiles and projectiles a +7 to strike while the target is painted no matter what the range from the firing unit. Target designators are fired just like any other beam weapon only they do no damage. When being built for a mecha, they are built just like any other beam weapon with a continuous beam only they cost 1/2 normal.
When painting a target, an attack roll must be made on each consecutive turn until impact of the weapon, whether it is one turn or ten. If the painting is interrupted by missing during one turn then the "smart" round will revert to its normal program. There are also hand carried versions of the target designator. It is shaped like a large rifle.
Laser Target Designator:
WA: +2 Range: 2000m Damage: none
Shots: 60 BV: N/A CONC: N/A WT: 5.0
Cost: 700 TL: 6There is enough power for 60 turns of "painting" targets. It is recharged in the same manner that the energy rifle in MZ is.
If a mecha has an advanced sensor package (Pg. 51 MZ+) it will give a warning to the pilot of the mecha that he is being painted by a laser designator.
Firing a laser designator through smoke will incur a -3 penalty to the attack roll.
If the firer of a laser designator is hit at any time during painting a target then the "lock" on the target will automatically be lost for that turn. Initiative can be very important at this time if it is the turn that the round or missile arrives.
