Algol, a chilly world on the brink of an impending ice age, boasts some of the most spectacularly beautiful scenery in the Galaxy. Algol is a world teeming with life, from the tiniest Hidemouse to the gigantic Foghunters. Algol is home to a lost colony of humans struggling to survive against an increasingly hostile environment, alien invasion, and each other.
On Algol you'll find isolated city-states, built under the protective domes of vast arcologies. Each city-state was built to protect the inhabitants from the planet's gigantic and dangerous wildlife.
There are four major factions on Algol. On the Northern continent, the peaceful and progressive fuedal monarchy of Elara, descended from the artists and scientists of the original colonists. On the southern continent, the warlike Kargan empire, descended from the soldiers of the original colonists. In between, the Ettarans, merchant nomads who call the equatorial islands their home, and the Murians, strange and powerful mystic recluses.
The growing Ice Age has forced both the Elarans and the Kargans towards the equator to find shelter from the cold. This contest over limited real estate has led to more than one war, but an uneasy peace maintains a Cold War of competition and paranoia.
On top of internal hostility, the Aggendi have returned! The Aggendi, responsible for the original stranding of the colonists, are aggressive reptillian aliens bent on destroying all human life. Can the Elarans and Kargans work together to save Algol from alien annihilation?
Algol was the first setting for Mekton, being features prominently in the first two editions of the game. It offers endless possibilities for storytelling from inner-city crime stories in the arcologies, giant monster battles to save the city, Cold-War espionage, or all-out Mecha-battling action vs. the Kargans or the Aggendi in space or on the surface. Anything is possible on Algol.
