Version 7.1 Introduction by David Kelk:

It's been quite a while since I've seen a new version of the net.mekton.handbook. I was concerned that James had disappeared and the book would go with him. Not wanting this to happen I got in touch with him and have agreed to take over the maintenance of the book for the forseeable future. James is just too busy right now to do it himself. My first priority is to get the book up on the web and add more mecha to it. If you have any mecha please mail them to me at FS337203@sol.yorku.ca.

James's Introduction for Version 6.3:

Well, here we are again, folx. Boy is this document getting big or what? As I type this, I'm looking at close to 200000 bytes of data which still hasn't been added yet. Pretty soon I won't be able to keep a copy on floppy anymore. After all I'm using an Amiga with no HD floppy drive so I only have the 800k that the floppies format as. Many thanks to those who helped to make this edition absolutely huge.

Suggestion for those of you who need Ideas for neat con events, try getting a campus map of your university and blowing it up to huge size and getting hexes put on it. I did that at a local con this year and the results were stunning. Problem was that the ranges were soooooo huge that it became difficult to even get close enough to engage the enemy. In fact, there's a pitifully small base of competent players out here, so I have to teach the game to nearly everyone who signs up. The unfortunate result of that is that by the time everybody knows the game well enough to take turns in quick order, the section's over.

This mechabook proved more taxing than usual. As many of you know, the Rec.Games.Mecha newsgroup was plagued with dissention during the creation of this version [version 6.3]. As a result of an argument in which I was forced to take a side, Jeroen B. decided that his designs and rules should be removed from the Mechabook. This and the argument itself, resulted in a lot of bad feeling on the part of many of our loyal supporters on the net. Among other things, it killed much of the joy I usually feel when I'm preparing to release a new edition of this document, and made me wonder if it was worth it.

Well, Jeroen and I have patched up our differences, and his stuff once more graces our pages. I hope that I never have to go through that again. The Mechabook is a place for free and easy exchange of ideas, not for political infighting. Remember this is a book by Mekton players and for Mekton players. In order for this document to continue in development, that priority must remain paramount.

Finally, my net Access at UBVMS terminates this May. I will thereafter be reachable at aa274@freenet.acsu.buffalo.edu where I will hopefully be able to continue this. If not, however, I will then pass the torch on to someone else.

Ah well. On we go. Happy mektoning!

I. Introduction:

A. What is the Mechabook? [By: James]

The Mechabook is a compilation of mecha designs by various authors, for use in the Mekton Mecha combat/roleplaying game. Most designs are written under the MTS system(Mekton Technical Supplement) with possible rules modifications by some authors which will be mentioned when relevant. Though most designs use MTS, Roadstriker II and Mekton II designs are also welcome. As limited as those construction systems may seem, they can still be used to good effect. Those who wish to submit to the mechabook may do so by E-Mailing their designs to me at ... [send them to the new editor instead]. A sample Mechsheet is included at the end of this file, but any readable format is acceptable. The sheet is provided merely as an example to help out those who are editing these designs.

B. Funding Blurb: [By: James]

Several people have sent me messages asking how much a copy of this piece of work costs. I can't give the phonebill cost over long distance. This effort costs me nothing but time, so don't send any money to me. It would probably be illegal anyway and certainly unethical, since I didn't do all the designs(just about 30 of them 8-). However, if you DO feel that monetary compensation is necessary, please make a contribution to the Leukemia Society, or Cancer Society offices near you. I am a recovering ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) patient and I feel that this will be more than enough compensation.

C. History:

The mechabook was created by James. He has maintained it and expanded it over the following versions:

As James no longer has time to maintain the book it is now being administered by myself, David Kelk:
